It’s hard to imagine that there was even a moment where I legitimately enjoyed playing Dante’s Inferno. Knee deep in Hell, buried in the game’s final levels, slaughtering the same enemies over and over and over again, I’m tired. A significant part of me wants to turn off my PlayStation 3, but I feel like I’ve invested too much time in the experience to end it now. So here’s what happened. Someone at EA noticed that the God of War games are incredibly successful, both commercially and critically. They noticed that those games are rife with excessive gore and nudity, that they unfold in busy set pieces accompanied by shrieking choirs and wailing strings on the soundtrack, and that they’re chock full of very angry men making very loud exclamations. Let’s do that, they said. People seem to like that.
