From Studio Starbreeze(the studio who brought you The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay,)The Darkness goes where few first-person shooters go, which is actually focusing on the characters and plot. The big question is, does The Darkness succeed in drawing you into its seedy underworld, or does it fall on its face and feel just like the mediocre first-person shooters that are becoming a trend?

Going past the main menu and into the first chapter of The Darkness, I had little idea what would be in store for me as the purchase came on a whim. It's going to sound a little peculiar, but The Darkness unfolds its pages to you with an introduction sequence that could honestly be the most exhilarating, well planned opening of any genre's game in the past number of years, bar none. At the beginning of 2004, Starbreeze Studios was an almost entirely unknown developer. When word got out that they were at the helm of a game based on the movie, The Chronicles of Riddick, the response was one of almost complete indifference. Yet, when the game was released later that year, it was heralded as one of the best games of 2004, and with good reason -- Starbreeze had created an FPS that that was far more than a mere corridor shooter. I have one thing to say about The Darkness: people give this game far too much love. This game wasn't bad. It wasn't good, but it definitely wasn't bad. The graphics are pretty in HD, the search quests are aggravating, controlling your darkness snakes is unpredictable, and aiming is imprecise. I can't tell you how many times I went to shoot for a light as to not be noticed while enemies were around and got slaughtered because they heard ba-bang bang and ran around some corner, guns-a-blazing.
