It's pointless cosmetics-first-gameplay-last software at its worst.

It's an edge of your seat roller coaster ride fired through a minimalist world of spine chilling terror. Intelligent plot twists and character development? Whatever. Such things cloud the atmosphere and instead we're given heart. Bloody and raw gouged freshly from a chest, its still beating will to live enough to drive players through gore both thick and thin.

How scary is Doom 3? Scary enough to place you in a pitch-black room with five demons who want to maul your brains out, and scary enough to keep you from holding your gun and flashlight at the same time. Given the abundance of exploding air vents in Mars City, is there seriously no duct tape one can use to attach his flashlight to his assault rifle? Or, if nothing else, is there no way to hold the flashlight and your damn pistol at the same time? The pistol is a one-handed weapon, and I can see that my character’s left arm functions just fine, so what’s the problem? You know, the old Resident Evil games employed tank-like controls to increase the tension of enemy encounters; it was a survival horror trick. But then Capcom matured and made Resident Evil 4, which proved it’s possible to scare players without physically handicapping the main character. Doom 3 doesn’t even technically qualify as a survival horror game and it’s preoccupied with pulling rubbish like this.

After a lengthy seven year wait, the sixth game in the long running Doom series has arrived. Id Software, Vicarious Visions, and Activision took a long time with Doom 3, but thankfully the quality of the gameplay, scary atmosphere, and gorgeous graphics are worth the wait. Despite some boring multiplayer and lack of originality, Doom 3 still delivers a stellar and horror-filled experience. And like in all the other Doom games, you’ll have to fight off thousands of Hell beings. Despite the fact y...

There comes a time in everyone’s gaming life that they allow curiosity take over their choices. They let the wildly erratic reviews of a game rest, and pick it up to simply look and see. That’s exactly what I did with Doom 3. I’ve read the reviews touting it as godsend, and I’ve read the ones labeling it a lifeless, banal piece of software. I’ve mashed my opinion of the game somewhere in between those two categories. There are some truly stunning moments that make me happy I spent...
